Ants in New Mexico

More than one-third of the ant species of the US are in New Mexico. They are found almost everywhere in this southwestern state.  There are several species of big and small New Mexico ants. If you are seeing large black ants here, they are likely to be the wood-destroying carpenter ants. The much feared fire ants are also found in the state. More types can be found below.
